Our Blog for TOP TEN special city events in Portland & Oregon - plus other community happenings...

There are many sources I use to find theTop Ten List, including many sent in by readers. But I got to thinking that it wasn't entirely fair to only give you one favorite of the 10 categories I report on each week. So I've put together some links for you to pick from on your own.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 30, 2012

Portland, Ore. — Hostelling International’s Portland Hawthorne Hostel has been named the third Portland business to achieve Sustainability at Work’s gold certification and is being recognized for its leadership in helping to make Portland one of the cleanest, most sustainable cities in the country. To earn this honor, Portland Hostel completed more than 88 actions to benefit our local economy, our community and our environment. These actions were verified during an on-site visit with a Sustainability at Work advisor.

Portland Hostel is committed to operations that embrace environmental, social and economic responsibility. Significant achievements in sustainability include calculating its carbon footprint and creating a reduction plan, recycling 75 percent of their waste, and composting nearly 2,100 pounds of food waste onsite annually. Most significantly, and with grant support from the City of Portland, Portland Hostel has built over 1,000 square feet of ecoroofs and permeable walls as well as an 8,000-gallon rainwater harvesting system that collects and distributes 43,000 gallons of rainwater annually to the hostel’s toilets. More than 800 community members participate in free or low-cost educational programming, events and ecotours, and guests from around the world spend a minimum of $11,500 using TriMet’s services annually.

“Congratulations to Portland Hawthorne Hostel on becoming Sustainability at Work’s third Gold Certified organization,” acknowledged Mayor Sam Adams. “We appreciate Portland Hostel’s leadership in taking concrete actions to make Portland a better place to live and work, and hope that their achievement inspires other businesses to make innovative changes that improve profitability and sustainability.” www.portlandonline.com/bps.

elloPortland's Blog Concentrates on Events that Serve the Community

Our vision for this blog is to bring you community information that's truly valuable to you. One of the things we'll be using it for is to let you know what's going on in the Portland area that we think will interest a wide variety of people.

Now anyone who has lived here for awhile knows that there is SOOOO much to do in Portland that to narrow it down to a top ten list is almost crazy to take on. But we have a method to our madness. We decided to take 10 categories and base our votes on the following criteria:

- Portlandish - which means, its very Portland... and Oregon - because we love getting out of town too!

- Outstanding qualities - well done with care and attention to detail

- Right - for a wide variety of groups & cultures - if you don't see something one week, check back again

- Tasteful - we're sensitive to our broad audience so we'll be keeping it "wholesome" for the "whole-sum"

- Life, light, living - we're looking for things that you can make memories with

- Answers - the need for community involvement: working together, playing together, considering the future...

- New - keeping it fresh and looking for those little hidden treasures

- Deals - which doesn't always mean "cheap" - its more accurately about "value"
