When I first arrived in Portland, Oregon some 22 years ago I was struck not only with its lush green pockets of color everywhere, but with how many bridges we came upon just driving through the downtown area. "Why", I asked my traveling companion, "has no one I ever talked to about Portland mentioned the number of bridges in this city?" It seemed to me it should be the first thing people talk about when describing this charmed place, as the Portland bridges are such a significant part of creating that charm.

The great variety of architecture the Portland bridges display is delightful and also rich in their history and construction. Of course there are many from the city who have written about Portland's bridges as well as photographed them extensively. We hope that visitors will take the time to really learn about and enjoy the wonderful bridges of Portland. Most are walking and biking friendly, all have a fascinating history.
